What is the difference between Yoga & Meditation?

November 30, 2010

pls tell me what’s the difference & benefits between Yoga & Meditation…and shall we try doing yoga/meditation by ourselves (like learning from website, books, cds etc)

Let me tell you this in detail.
Meditation means Thinking constantly of one subject/object.
Yoga mean (came from Sanskrit word Yuja) union with the ultimate.

But, in today’s world yoga is termed for the physical exercises that they do for the well being of the body & Meditation is taken as just sitting & CONCENTRATING on one point like the nose tip or the light point or the center of a circle et.

But, in case when we think of Spirituality:
Let me clarify certain things.

Meditation has its own benefits. The ancient proven theory for meditation is "You become like the object upon which you meditate … or… you get the qualities of the object slowly & gradually upon which you meditate…"
That was the reason the genuine spiritual practices include meditation in it as the meditation means purely thinking of the Devine as we want to become God like to get mergence with him or with the ultimate.
In Meditation, usually, we think of the Devine constantly & we try to become God Like gradually.
It is like, if we think of our beloved or if we are in constant remembrance of the beloved or the most liked or influenced person, after a duration we find some of his habits & styles are automatically there in our behavior.
To follow the same principle, they meditate on The Devine.
Another positive point in Meditation is we train our mind & we regulate our mind but we don’t force it to do or behave in a certain way. As any thing suppressed for long, when it is released for a moment, bounces back with more strength, just like a spring. Mind as well will do the same if we try to put stress on it for a certain thing. Concentration is like suppressing the mind & forced to do a certain thing & meditation is training a mind gradually.
Just like a horse with a chariot is put with two plates attached to its eyes so as not to get distracted but the horse in a derby race is not. As the horse in a race is trained & the one with chariot is put to run in a forced route. That’s the difference in Meditation & concentration.

Coming to Yoga. Now a day, they take yoga for physical well being & they think that sitting in a posture (Mudra they call as) like Padmasana, Shirsasana etc & doing pranayam, we get the mergence with the ultimate or Devine.
But, the fact is, as the ancient Vedas, there are 8 steps to start spiritual practices & are called Ashtang yoga i.e (8 winged preparations for the spiritual practice).

Of course, there are many books to teach the things. But nothing, without a perfect spiritual guide, will take any human to the ultimate or the destination. They may reach to a certain extent but it’s surely not the destination.

Seek a Guru (Master) who himself has Mastered Himself.
If your pursuit is not spiritual but just something as physical well being, then May any book or a yoga teacher help you.

Please take an hour to visit “www.srcm.org “to get to know a little detailed about the things.

Thank you.

May God take you the correct path for you.

I want to loose 15 lbs and tone my inner thighs!?

November 30, 2010

i’m 15yrs old and 5 foot 6 and 140lbs. I have a good figure size 10 on top and bottom and a relatively small waist. I just want to loose some weight and tighten myself up abit. Like i am toned and fit, i was put on cheerleading team last year (UK btw, it only lasted for 2 months but hey) and i can run a mile and a half in 12 minutes without stopping.
I walk to and from school each day which is up hill and about 30 minutes there and back. ( walking )
Does this sound like a good idea:
I am starting pilates/ yoga ( which one is better for toning ? ) 1 x a week ( hour )
I am starting aerobics 1 x a week ( hour )
Breakfast: porridge
and lunch usually something like a chicken sandwich, salad and a kit kat and banana.
Dinner: my mum usually makes this but it always has loads of veg in and is healthy.
i dont eat after dinner.
I try and drink as much water as possible!
( ps, i’m not really into waking up every morning and doing 100 press ups, 100 lunges, blah blah blah, i want it to be fun :P that way you stick to it)
So any ideas? THANK YOU !

your 15…. go outside and play

Any suggestions for a more spiritual yoga practice?

November 27, 2010

I like my yoga practice to still be a little challenging, but very spiritual. I usually dim the lights, light candles and incense, and do some chanting/meditating before hand. I try to make my yoga practice serene and peaceful. But I find most yoga DVD’s are too "workout for a perfect body" based and tend to lose the spiritual/medatative part of yoga.

Any dvd’s/CD’s/downloads that are more spiritually based yoga practice that anyone can suggest. I just did the Chandra Namaskar (moon salutations) from YogaDownload.com and it is just the perfect kind of yoga for me. Flowing and a little bit challenging, but peaceful. Thanks!!!

I think most commercially available dvd’s avoid spiritual aspects because they aim to appeal to widest possible audience, thus present yoga as essentially a physical exercise.
Seems fact that most yoga dvd’s ignore both meditation or pranayama (breathing techniques) supports that view.

Shiva Rea’s "Yoga Shakti" does include short segments on meditation and pranayama, as does Dharma Mittra’s "Maha Sadhana", which is available in either Level 1 or Level 2 (I’ve only seen level 1).

Anusara style generally has a strong spirituality perspective to it’s instruction, but I have not seen any Anusara dvd’s.

I need some help with healthy eating, I am completely reinventing my diet, help?

November 27, 2010

Hi, I am a 15-year-old in grade 10, and my diet is mediocre. I really want to start eating healthfully to get better skin, more energy, and perhaps shedding a few pounds would not be bad either. I already take a vitamin in the morning, but other than that, I don’t eat a lot of healthy foods. I am going food shopping this afternoon with my parents and am wondering what things I should buy? For breakfast, what are some healthy food ideas? I was thinking I would start with things like milk, my whole family drinks 2% but I was going to start drinking skim or 1%, which one would be better? Just please tell me what healthy foods I should buy! I already have a yoga workout kit and am purchasing a treadmill, so healthy eating is what I really need help with now. Thanks :)

Hi. It’s great that you’ve decided to become healthy! Try to stick to as natural, whole products as possible. Stuff like vegetables, beans, wholegrains, fruit, nuts etc. For each meal make sure you have a portion of fruit or veg, one of protein and one of complex carbs. The combination of these foodgroups will stop you getting too hungry. Add in a couple of healthy snacks like nuts and dried fruit and you have a perfectly balanced diet.
