I heard that yoga can really help your overall feeling of well being, as well as help stabilize your moods. I bought a CD and have done the routine 3 times. However, each time I do it, I am overcome with a wave of severe fatigue. That lasts for about 5 minutes (I just keep going) but being really tired and just feeling kind of out and shaky lasts for an hour or so after the workout.
Some background… My husband just joined AA about 5 days ago and is detoxing, and I stopped drinking with him. We both drank every day (although for me it was only 1 or 2 drinks) for about 7 years – I didn’t go through any physical withdrawal at all so I’m just relearning how to live without drinking every day. I also lost a very close family member about 3 weeks ago… So, I’ve got more than a little stress going on in my life right now.
Could the overwhelming ‘tired’ feeling just be from a release of stress and the toxins from drinking that I know my muscles must contain, or should I be concerned and stop the yoga? I just had an abdominal CT about 6 months ago and complete blood work-up, so I know that my liver, kidneys, stomach, etc are all normal. I am also a smoker, and I am working on quitting – in case that could cause the tiredness.
If this is caused by toxins that are being released, is there anything else I can do or take to help with the symptoms and this overall crappy feeling?
Thank you for any help you can give.
First, never exercise yourself to a point of discomfort in Yoga. The whole goal of Hatha yoga is to unite the mind and body so that they are in accord, not just on your yoga mat, but off of it as well. If you’re feeling emotionally or physically defeated after a practice, something isn’t right.
I would suggest finding a gentler Yoga regimen- check your local studio schedules- I’m sure you’ll find a class such as "Gentle Yoga" which would be a great place to start.
Part of the reason I suggest a class is that if you are practicing Yoga to a CD, and you are a complete beginner, you may be doing postures incorrectly or in poor alignment. Doing a posture in poor alignment can be painful and cause problems down the line. Having a teacher present will be a comfort in that way- he or she may instruct or help you to move an arm or a leg in a posture, and a slight movement may result in a relaxing feeling of "Ahhhhh….."
It seems you came to Yoga because you’re really fatigued emotionally, mentally, and maybe going through some withdrawal symptoms, even if only on a subconscious level. Being tired going in, you are likely to be very tired going out.
When we are tired or stressed, our bodies release hormones that are meant to propel us forward into a "fight or flight" mode. This is known as the "stress response." If you are already experiencing the stress response in higher than normal levels in your daily life, then when you begin any form of exercise, you have those hormones rushing through your body during your workout. Those hormones are probably responsible for your "shaky" feeling when you’re done. They don’t feel very good when they’re running their course, although the evolutionary purpose of them is to help you outrun or win a dangerous situation.
Yes, some of your discomfort may be caused by the release of toxins. Twisting postures, for instance, in effect squeeze the organs and "wring them out." To be sure you’re effectively flushing your system, you need to drink a lot of water.
Sounds like you’ve got a lot going on. I think you’d benefit from a gentle class that nurtures instead of challenges at this time. You may find a teacher who you really connect with. I know as you grow through the changes you’re experiencing right now, you’ll grow with yoga, and it will become a source of strength for you.
Namaste!

It’s our second anniversary. It falls just 2 weeks before Xmas.
He is into movies, music, travel, the outdoors/camping, martial arts, yoga, and sports.
Any suggestions? I’m at a loss because I tend to buy him gifts throughout the year, and don’t ‘save up’ my ideas for special occasions…I really need to start doing that!
Why don’t you go get some professional sexy pictures taken?! That would be a real treat and I am sure he will love it!
Composer, vocalist, dancer Lis Addison dances to the Throat Chakra piece from her CD “The Song of the Tree”. The sound and movement on this sample activate the Throat Chakra. The CD features 7 songs designed to activate each one of the primary Chakras. A movement DVD is in production. Like a tree, energy flows within our bodies from root to crown and is received and released at varying levels along the way.
