Course Details
Learn how to teach individualized and group yoga programs based on the nature of the student’s Ayurvedic constitution and imbalance. This course emphasizes the energetics of each asana, and each form of pranayama, so that the pose and the breath can be used to support the balancing the physical subtle energies of the body and mind, and help heal the client. Students will also be introduced to yoga nidra and Ayurvedic nutrition in the healing process. Ayurvedic yoga therapists can work on their own to support the healing process, hold classes in studios or work as a part of an integrative team in a healing center. This is a professional training program for yoga teachers of all traditions and is also open to all practitioners of healing arts.
Curriculum
Foundational Ayurvedic Principles: This includes an exploration of the philosophical basis of Ayurveda and the healing process, five element theory, tridosha theory, the seven dhatus, agni, ama, and ojas. Each participant will also explore their own constitution.
Ayurvedic Lifestyle: Students will learn about how to live an Ayurvedic lifestyle and will receive guidance about how to create a healthy daily routine. Students will learn how to oil their bodies, use a neti pot, and utilize essential oils in their massage oils, eye washes, and tongue scraping. Students will perform these practices daily for much of the course.
Ayurvedic Psychology: This is the understanding of how a personal psycho-spiritual development affects the process of health and disease. Topics include: the personality of the doshic types, the subtle energies of the mind (prana, tejas and ojas), and how the personality changes as we move grow and evolve spiritually.
Energetics of Asana: Each pose is explored relative to the five directions of pranic movement and how that impacts the three doshas. Consideration is given to the effect a pose has on the three doshas and the subtle energies of the body.
Energetics of Pranayama: Based on an understanding of the flow of prana through the three major nadi, participants will learn the energetic effects of alternate nostril breathing, solar pranayama, lunar pranayama, and kapalabhati. Participants will then learn to recommend the appropriate practice for their students or clients.
Pratyahara as a Healing Tool: Students will learn how to turn attention their inward and explore their physical and subtle bodies and use this awareness to support the healing process.
Introduction Nutrition and Healing: Ayurvedic diet and nutritional concepts will be explored in this class for the purposes of personal well-being, and not for making recommendations to others.
Daily Schedule
6:00 — 8:00: Satsang (Meditation, chanting, evenint lecture or concert)
8:00 — 10:00: Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Lecture, discussion, demonstrations
10:00 — 11:00 Brunch
11:00 – 12:00 Break
12:00 — 2:00 Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Lecture, discussion, demonstrations
2:00 -2:30: Break, Ocean swim
2:30 — 4:00: Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Lecture, discussion, demonstrations
4:00 — 6:00: Asana class — Each class utilizes principles taught in the lectures. These are full 2 hour yoga asana classes.
6:00 — 7:00: Dinner
7:00 – 8:00: Break
8:00 — 10:00 Satsang (Meditation, chanting, evenint lecture or concert)
By the 3rd or 4trh day when students begin to learn personal practices for well-being (dinacharya), they will have personal practice time from 7:00am – 8:00am. This includes time to oil the body, perform neti, clean the tongue, wash the eyes and other related practices.

Marc Halpern (Siva), DC, CAS, PKS, Ayurvedacharya, is a pioneer in Ayurvedic medicine in the United States and a Sivananda yoga teacher. He is the founder and director of the California College of Ayurveda – the first Ayurvedic college to train practitioners of Ayurveda outside of India.
